PHYSICIAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The emergency medicine fellowship is a partnership between Relias Healthcare and North Mississippi Medical Center. It is a one-year intensive program with a curriculum designed to develop recent family medicine or internal medicine graduates as emergency medicine physicians. There are opportunities to work within our system as emergency medicine physicians upon completion of the fellowship training.
The fellows will rotate through the following specialties:
MONTH 1 – Orientation
MONTH 2 – Emergent Airway/Anesthesia
MONTH 3 – Trauma
MONTH 4 – Cardiology
MONTH 5 – Elective
MONTH 6 – Critical Care
MONTH 7 – Obstetrics and Gynecology
MONTH 8 – Pediatrics
MONTH 9 – Orthopedic Trauma
MONTH 10 – Radiology
MONTH 11 – Ophthalmology
MONTH 12 – Elective/ Board Prep
Each month there is a four-hour didactic session which includes lectures, case presentations and board review discussion. In the Relias Healthcare fellowship handbook, there are assigned readings from Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine Manual and the lectures correspond to those topics. The fellows present cases in the ABPS format during each month’s didactic session. Additionally, board questions are reviewed and discussed.
Prior to rotating in the department, the fellows participate in a cadaver lab. The lab gives the fellows an opportunity to perform advance procedures prior to working in the department. An emergent obstetrics simulation lab is also offered during the ob-gyn month. We continually work to provide the fellows with additional learning opportunities in simulation environments.
Twice a year, fellows and physician attendings meet to discuss topics which we may be able to apply to the groups’ clinical practice.
Past topics include:
“The use of ketamine in the treatment of acute pain.”
“Balanced Crystalloids versus Saline in Acutely Ill Patients”
“Contrast-Induced Nephropathy: Monster or Myth?”
